Fog Always Liftsby Manuel CarmonaDesigned by queer Latino muralist Manuel (Juan Manuel) Carmona, Fog Always Lifts is a visual statement of resilience, identity, and collective strength in San Francisco, the Mission, and Fog City CF.The mural centers on two hands completing a successful clean & jerk — a moment of truth in weightlifting that represents discipline, persistence, and earned power. The chalked barbell carries the patina of experience, signaling repetition, struggle, and mastery. Fog flanks the composition, symbolizing the uncertainty we all move through; the lift above it becomes a metaphor for clarity, purpose, and self-realization.The Fog City logo appears...

AACI is an organization founded in 1973 to serve and support marginalized and ethnic communities in Santa Clara County. Three artists submitted proposals and I was selected to paint these four ageless/raceless hands overlapping and interconnected. In collaboration with Simon Malvaez and Voss Gallery, we designed these banners for San Francisco’s Ferry Building in celebration of Pride Month 2023. The faces depicted reflect the city’s rich cultural diversity—varying in age, gender, and ethnicity—to mirror the vibrant mosaic of our communities. A continuous black line weaves through each color of the original rainbow flag, symbolizing the interconnectedness of all living beings. Together, these individuals represent a collective narrative of identity, unity, and the shared pride and love for San Francisco.
